Wild NightlifeToday, it is vital for any home or business to be as secure as possible. If you need a video surveillance system during night or in areas with low light, then it is essential to choose a set up that provides such a facility. The best option would be infrared security cameras that capture images even in the dark.Creative Commons License photo credit: jurvetson

An infrared camera works by calculating the brightness of a room or particular area. They feature special LED lighting which can be seen on the outside lens. These LEDs are able to capture light from the regions of electromagnetic spectrum that allow an image to be created even if there is little visible light. For this reason many people think of infrared cameras as having a night vision capability.

An infrared security camera will switch its mode to infrared only when the light drops below a certain level. It captures black and white images. It is important to understand that not all night cameras come with special LED lights, make sure you check out the specifications of any security system in full before investing.

This type of camera is available also as part of a fully integrated CCTV system. Many of the latest options also feature special IR Illuminators which can be focused on important objects such as access points and equipment. This helps to improve the overall surveillance whether in low light or in night. Technically, they may or not rely on the ambient light that is reflected but this is independent to actual light level.

Additionally, the IR Illuminators allow any obscurants to be penetrated, such as the haze, fog and smoke. Infrared Illuminators are used typically for a low light environment. Sometimes, when the IR array is focused narrowly or the hold is not strong enough the external IR Illuminator will give an extra sharp image. It can provide an additional infrared light source that is invisible to the naked eye normally. Continue Reading »

Monitoring outdoors at night? Infrared Security Camera!

Monday 1 February 2010 @ 12:07 am

willamette infraredWhen you need twenty four hour security in your home or business you can depend on an infrared security camera for monitoring property and valuables. We all need to feel secure and have different needs but what we have in common is the need to depend on equipment that is reliable. The benefits of an infrared camera is that it does not stop working when the brightness of the room changes. How an infrared camera works is that it slowly adjusts to the room’s brightness as it changes. You may not be able to see but it does. Most cameras record full color brightness. But as the lights fade the color camera can transform itself into a black and white camera in total darkness.

Cameras come in wired and wireless formatting styles. They also come ready for indoors or out with special features based on what you need. The wireless models are a bit more expensive but work effectively when running wires are not an option.

Distance is also functional for viewing as well with an infrared camera. Based on the model you buy you are able to see several hundred yards with the right camera, and even in the dark. Many are self adjusting and you can find others that are motion censored and auto focus. Many have longer ranges of vision as well. Continue Reading »

Infrared Security Cameras – For Your Safety And Peace Of Mind

Saturday 31 October 2009 @ 7:35 am

infrared security cameraInfrared light is visible as red or violet, which is translated by electromagnetic waves. Some waves are very short, and others are longer, similar to microwaves. When it comes to surveillance, there is no better way to do this than by using infrared security cameras.

There’s is a lot of technical information available but for the layman it would suffice to share only the information needed to source the correct system.

Because infrared radiation can be measured and seen with special equipment, there are now many ways to view objects either totally in the dark or at normal conditions. Most important to understanding IR cameras is the concept that they provide their own light source. This is not true. Only when the light dims below a pre-set level will the camera’s built in light source turn on.

The IR camera either has built in emitters or they are on separate enclosures. The more emitters your camera has, the more it will light up the area of surveillance. Make sure that your camera identifies it’s effective range and angle of it’s beam. Continue Reading »
